In the mountains, “neither stone, nor ice, nor rock,” nor the weather is reliable. The sun is scorching below, a blizzard is howling above and prickly snowflakes are cutting your face. For the skin, the high-altitude climate, when it is cold and the sun is shining at the same time, is quite unusual, but proper care will help you cope with any difficulties, which will be discussed by dermatologist, cosmetologist, NAOS expert Igor Patrin.

In the mountains you will definitely need different moisturizers, but a cream with a nourishing, rich and oily texture is a must have, regardless of your skin type.
And also – sunscreen, a product with panthenol for burns or SOS balm for irritation, hand cream, lip balm.

The procedure for skin care can be as follows:

In the morning after cleansing and before breakfast, you should apply a moisturizer or serum, which will protect your skin from drying out in the wind. It is important that you do not go outside immediately after this, but stay indoors for some time. But 20 minutes before going out into the cold, apply a protective cream with a thick texture and a sunscreen with SPF 50. In the evening, first of all, it is necessary to carry out high-quality cleansing (because creams containing SPF are very thick and can lead to clogging of pores). The next step is toning. At night (40 minutes before bedtime), apply a nourishing cream with an oily texture.

Sun light

Among the main factors that have a negative impact on the skin in the mountains are intense ultraviolet radiation, dry air, sudden temperature changes and strong winds. Moreover, the intensity of ultraviolet radiation increases with every thousand meters above sea level by approximately 10–12%. That is, when you go up on a lift from one line to another, your risk of getting a burn and premature aging of the skin increases quite noticeably. In addition, ultraviolet radiation has the unpleasant property of being reflected from snow and thus negatively affecting the skin both above and below. And it doesn’t matter that the sun may hide behind the clouds from time to time, you can get sunburned in the mountains even in cloudy weather.

What is important to do?

Take sunscreen with you on the slopes or for a walk in any weather and use it constantly. Choose products with a high SPF (at least 30) and broad spectrum protection to provide reliable protection against UVA and UVB rays. Apply cream even in cloudy weather. If you are constantly outdoors, renew the product every two hours. Pay attention to the labeling: the product must be resistant to friction and sweat, especially if you are physically active in the mountains.

Be sure to protect your lips; their delicate skin is most susceptible to ultraviolet radiation, as it is not protected by clothing. For lips you need to use not only balm or hygienic lipstick, but also a product with SPF. An excellent option is Sanskrin in stick form, since the dense texture, in addition to UV protection, will provide protection against weathering. The stick is convenient to use on other sensitive areas, for example, on the bridge of the nose, cheeks, ears, chin – all places that are not protected by a mask or clothing.

Hands also need special care, since on the mountain every now and then you have to take off your gloves, so by the evening the skin dries and becomes chapped. Take hand products with an oily texture with you to the mountains.

In spite of the winds

Dry air dehydrates the skin, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation. Temperature changes and strong winds can cause chapping and cracks in the skin. It is important to use protective clothing and accessories – special thermal underwear, windproof and waterproof jackets and pants, gloves and, of course, glasses with a UV filter. Even if you come to the mountains in spring or summer, try to choose clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Remember that dark, dense fabric protects better from ultraviolet rays than light ones.

Shield Wall

In the mountains, be sure to use a protective cream to prevent damage to exposed areas from the cold. The task of such a product is to form an additional barrier between the outer layers of the skin and the aggressive environment. For effective protection, it is important that the cream contains nutritional components, such as vegetable oil extracts. You can pay attention to moisturizers from pharmacy brands from the range for people with dry skin and atopic dermatitis. They just have a nutritious consistency and are as safe as possible in their composition. The whole family can use these tools.

Calm Me

The weather can change during the day: in the morning there is a risk of getting sunburned, and in the evening – a frostbitten nose. Both are best treated with regenerative agents containing panthenol or depanthenol. If the skin is chapped, irritation and rough areas appear on its surface, increase the frequency of applying moisturizer (balm), and also additionally apply products that promote rapid skin restoration, containing panthenol or aloe juice.
